Men's Personal HealthMen's personal health can be a very sensitive subject to confront and discuss. Growing up many of us are taught by family, friends, or through the media that tough men don't get hurt. Real men do not go see doctors. If something hurts ignoring it will probably make it go away. Well, no matter how tough we would like to think we are reality teaches us that ignoring aches and pains only leads to more aches and pains if not worse. This nonsensical way of thinking is pervasive in the male gender whether they are gay or straight, and protecting yourself inside and out is only successful through education and sharing experiences amongst ourselves and doctors. This brings up another thing we need to learn to do better, talk! In the gay community men's personal health takes on an even greater need for communication and education. There are a variety of reasons that gay men face different health concerns and encounter different health risks than the general population. Depression, suicide, and other mental ailments are more frequent in gay men because of increased discrimination and abuse suffered as a child or adolescent. There is also a higher than average abuse of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco which increases the risk of many serious health problems. Gay men's personal health is seriously being affected by unsafe sexual practices which creates unique challenges for maintaining their sexual health and wellness. Eating disorders is also becoming a prevalent health concern as well, along with the increasing new challenges of caring for the aging gay men's community. Awareness and action are needed to battle these men's personal health issues. There must be a greater effort than what is currently happening to bring these concerns to light and face them with understanding and education. All of the above mens personal health concerns are intertwined with one another. Each one can be a cause of another or an effect of suffering from one. Depression left untreated can lead to suicide which is higher in the gay community than other groups. It can also lead to abuse of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco which are depressants in themselves. Abuse of the former also leads to poor decisions in one's sexual practices increasing the risk of being infected with an STD or worse HIV. It just becomes one vicious, unforgiving cycle that leads to pain and suffering. Don't be one of those stereo typical men that don't think it will affect them because it can and it will if not addressed properly.
